Since I'm coming from Windows 10, Yaru looks a lot more modern than them.Īnd that's my issue I suppose. And the main reason for why I like Gnome more than Cinnamon, Mate or XFCE is because of the theme. Gnome doesn't have that many customization options as far as I know, but due to the way it looks like, I don't have to bother with accent colors.
I tried to install a theme for Plasma, Breeze Alpha Dark I think, but it felt pretty unstable -it had a widget from which you could mess around with accent colors and opacity. I love the dark theme that Windows comes with, and I also like that it can pick accent colors from my wallpaper.
I kinda like Plasma, and I could get over the fact that it looks too much like Windows for me, but it's the themes that I'm not sure how to work with. I don't have it installed as of right now, but since I tried a couple different Ubuntu flavors, I know for sure that Kubuntu 18.10 was a lot smoother than Ubuntu 18.10. However, animation lags during simple usage is something that sucks. I have other gripes with Gnome anyway, like the fact that it lacks app tray icons, which is like incredibly dumb coming from Windows, and small cosmetic issues, like how when I have Discord notifications, this ugly and poor quality and red dot with a number appears on the icon in the bar, but I could ignore them. It generally worked pretty well, but it drops frames/stutters during certain animations, especially the one where all the apps appear, and the minimizing and maximizing of programs from the bar (I installed an extension called Dash to Dock I think, which had an option that allowed Gnome to minimize and maximize programs like Windows was).
Last week however, I tried to install it again, and this time it worked, in that there was no lag in the lock screen and I could login without any issues, I installed the Nvidia driver that was recommended from the Software and Updates, and it worked.īut performance was still not smooth. However, performance was still weird, so I gave up on it.
I looked online, and I found a tutorial that led me to entering a big terminal instead of the graphic interface, I purged the drivers and then I used a command for Ubuntu to automatically install the best Nvidia drivers, and it worked.
It lagged horribly on the lock screen, and it crashed on a black screen after logging in. The first time, Ubuntu wouldn't even start properly, the first boot after installing it.
It's a bit complicated, since I tried and failed to deal with Gnome twice. I love many of the advantages that Linux distros have, and I want to love Gnome, but it's kinda pointless when it runs worse than the Windows I'm trying to move away from. alright?īut literally, my main desire is for it to be smooth. I am a noob, but I'm alright with learning new things - the main difference that I've noticed so far is that Manjaro and Arch are different when it comes to installing programs, that you don't use ppa's and deb files, but that there is this big repository of programs that you can access, and that sounds. I've heard people saying that Manjaro is faster and smoother than Ubuntu, so I assume that this would be the case when comparing normal Ubuntu with Manjaro Gnome. Now, my knowledge on Arch Linux and how it's different from Debian and Ubuntu is pretty small. Although, as of right now, Kubuntu is my main option. Kubuntu was better, but part of why I changed was specifically because I wanted to challenge myself and push myself away from how Windows works. The animation lags and is stuttering on 18.10 (even if I think that it was supposed to be better), and while 18.04 worked better for me, I really dislike the old look of Ubuntu, it looks outdated. I tried Ubuntu, that's what everyone is talking about, but I've had a lot of problems with Gnome. I obviously won't be gaming much on the Linux distro, but I have a moderately good PC, so I really want it to be smooth.
I'm starting to get sick of Windows but I mainly use my PC for gaming, so I've been thinking about dualbooting and installing a distro on a smaller SSD that I'm not using. I've been trying to get into Linux for a while. I'm sorry if the question sounds kinda weird.
